The Importance of Data Sanitization
The ability to destroy digital data beyond recovery is a process known as Data Sanitization. Whether this involves entire hard drives, partitions or individual files and folders, sanitization is essential to ensure that deleted data is non-recoverable.
From the perspective of the individual user, data sanitization ensures that sensitive data, such as financial and health records, tax returns, passwords and other privileged information is not available to unauthorized persons. This has great significance when computers are sold, donated or discarded.
Data sanitization also is a required component of regulatory compliance. This is especially significant to those organizations entrusted with not only Protected Health Information (PHI) as in the case of HIPAA, but those entities governed by Sarbanes Oxley (SOX), Gramm Leach Bliley (GLB), FACTA and other Acts and regulations. The stewardship of highly sensitive data requires sanitization at the appropriate lifecycle management interval.
Data sanitization is accomplished by overwriting data with erasure methods that place layer upon layer of new data over the existing data (“overwriting” or “data wiping”). Depending upon the erasure algorithm used, recovery is impossible.

CyberScrub provides a number of data sanitization solutions that will meet these erasure requirements:
cyberCide is designed for full disk sanitization. This process removes all data from targeted hard drives and/or partitions. This family of products can be deployed locally or over a network. Extensive log files are generated that include hardware serial numbers, erasure methods used, dates/times of erasure, errors and other information for auditing and inventory control. Command lines are available.
Privacy Suite software is designed for selective data sanitization of targets specified by any number of parameters. It can erase specific files/folders, erase information not intentionally acquired (such as cookies, web tracks, traces generated from popular applications, such as Office, etc.), wipe free space to ensure previously “deleted files ” are sanitized and cannot be recovered and more. A fully functional free trial is available for download and evaluation.
